To The Editor:
I would like to share my support for H.722, the Vermont Right to Know GMO bill, and encourage others to actively support this bill as well. As a firm believer in the nutritive value of whole foods, I believe we all have the right to know what is in the food we consume. According to VPIRG, it is estimated that 70 percent of all packaged food contains GMO ingredients, yet there is currently no way to identify them on the shelf. Genetic engineering has a detrimental effect on nutritional quality as well as the soil and landscape on which the food is grown. Without labeling, the long-term health effects cannot be determined. Mandatory labeling would provide consumers the power to consciously decide whether to purchase products with GMO ingredients, along with the ability to shape the market and the future.
When it comes to how we nourish our bodies, we need to pay attention to the sources. If this bill is passed, it is the first step to empowering these choices. To get involved, sign the petition at www.vtrighttoknow.org, and contact your local elected officials to voice your support.
