To The Editor:
This summer Green Mountain Power intends to put smart meters on every dwelling as Vermont has received $69 million for this purpose from the federal government.
These devices are non-ionizing EMRs (electromagnetic radiation) transmitting 24 hours a day. No research on health effects has been done since 1986.
There are other alternatives for constantly monitoring the use of electricity in a home – fiber optics which are already in use by Vermont Electric Co-op and planned by Vermont Electric Company in partnership with IBM.
Green Mountain Power has sent everyone a letter stating that if one wants to opt out and not have a smart meter, one will have to pay $10 a month. This is no longer true as the Legislature has passed S.214 which cancels paying a fee.
So, now if people have privacy issues or doubts about the health effects, they must let Green Mountain Power know but won’t have to pay anything. I will also put a notice on my meter in case installers get confused.
