To The Editor:
When the first "moose" sign was taken from the Granville Gulf, I thought I'd write to you and lament the fact.
Obviously I never did. Now, another sign has disappeared and I am
pretty upset about it...a lot of us who live in Granville are upset and
even angry.
There is a dedicated group that makes these signs...to warn travelers
that there are moose in this area of Route 100 and to please slow down.
These folks spend their time and money to make and put up the signs
and, yes, some of them are very attractive.
The signs are not only to save a moose but to save a human life. Not so
long ago a young man on a motorcycle was killed when he struck a moose
in the area that the signs warn of and the moose had to be put down.
The moose come down from their "homes" in the early morning and at dusk
and in the night. They are hard to see when you're barreling along at
70 mph.
I am told that a moose's eyes don't reflect the light as do the eyes of
other animals so you, the motorist, don't have that advance warning.
Also, the moose is very tall so if you are only watching the road just
in front of you, you won't see the body of the moose which would be at
eye level. When you strike a moose, you may kill him, but you just
might kill yourself. You will certainly smash up your car.
So please, drive slowly in the 'moose crossing" area, you just might see one of these magnificent animals.
And, if you are one of the persons who took these signs and they are
amusingly hanging on the wall of your condominium or apartment in
Boston, just think about the next murder you may be responsible for.
The creep who took the most recent sign damaged the tree it was hanging
on, leaving a huge scar to remind us of your thievery.
It seems the whole world is living by the motto "I got mine. The heck with you."
