"Signs might be worth a try"

To The Editor:

I believe it's time for our 'Town Nannies' (they use to be called the Town Fathers -- of which four out of five whom should be retired ASAP) to call off the 'Waitsfield Sign Police.'

They should use a little of their Liberal/Progressive/Control driven foresight and make a few bucks for the town, by means other than over-assessing property values and traffic revenues, by charging a fee on those folks who wish to have a moderate sandwich board outside their establishments.

This might be the right time to do a test or pilot program; say during Green and Gold week to allow our merchants to advertise a special or two? They could pay a fee, say $5 a day, for this great privilege. Plus think of all the fun the 'Nannies' could have coming up with the size of the sign, the color it has to be, how far from the road, the building, how high the lettering must be, how many days it could be, etc.

In addition this could be a nice distraction from all their schemes to control everything from the number of trees you can have, to the extorting of 10 percent of a landowner's property, to packing their multi-layer boards and commissions (e.g., the CC, DRB, PC, SRC, ZBA, etc.) with a limited number of real Vermonters inside these groups of un-elected bureaucrats, while trying to get the gullible town residents to buy into a multi-million-dollar wastewater project, which will benefit only a few and become a huge financial burden upon the already overtaxed property owners in this community.

Signs may be worth a try. What do you think?
