Let your voice be heard

To The Editor:

As a consumer, I strongly believe that I have the right to know all of the ingredients found in food products. While I enjoy certain food products that contain genetically engineered ingredients, I think it is important for these ingredients to be labeled, so that all consumers may be well informed about what they are eating.

Simply labeling all non-GMO food as such is not sufficient. Just as we have the right to know if a product contains certain allergens such as nuts, eggs, gluten, or dairy, we should also easily be able to discern if genetically modified ingredients are present in food. This isn’t inconveniencing corporations like Monsanto; it is only asking them for the honest disclosure that consumers have a right to. Thanks to the hard work of groups like VPIRG, Vermonters statewide have the chance to become involved in this important consumer rights issue.

VPIRG’s summer campaign is out in force to inspire action statewide, but it is imperative that supporters of GMO labeling reach out and encourage their senators to support this bill next legislative session. Let us ensure that the voices of Vermonters not be drowned out by the will of large corporations.
