As a former mayor of a village on Long Island, I can testify that you rarely have an opportunity to take advantage of a gift of 60 percent of the cost of a needed project. The project of need in Waitsfield is a new home to replace our current town hall, now cramped in the lower level of our town library building. The situation is critical since the library needs the space for its own expanded use, including conference space along with added books recordkeeping and storage. Waitsfield is the only town, as we look at our neighboring towns of Warren, Moretown, Fayston and Waterbury, that does not have its own town office building.
So, here we sit with an opportunity to build a new building to suit our needs which would cost $1,250,000 less a state grant of $750,000, which would reduce our taxpayer cost to $500,000. The grant can only be adaptable to construction of the town hall building on the designated property known as the Farm Stand property, now vacant.
We need a yes vote no later than July 30 from my fellow Waitsfield residents for the select board to put the town office building construction under way. It is a must since an opportunity such as this is likely to be gone forever should the vote fail. It is an obligation, my friends, that would save us thousands of taxpayer money for another project at another time and another time will come – you can count on it.
We need to move our town hall out of the library. Please do not procrastinate. Vote yes at the current town office. You can vote in advance by absentee ballot until Monday, July 29, at 4:30 p.m., and on July 30 at the Waitsfield Elementary School from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
