Wind: 7 mph
To The Editor:
I am writing in response to the commentary about the flashing speed signs that are now in our villages. I know that they do not slip into vernacular Vermont and perhaps detract from our historical village. I can appreciate that, and anyone that knows me knows that I would love even to go back to the horse and buggy. That is not, however, practical in today's society. Unfortunately, it takes a flashing light to awaken us from our focus on the destination. People are so fixated on their destinations, their cellphones, busy calendars and life in general that they are not paying attention to the journey, and that can be very dangerous.
Our villages are teeming with children, the elderly, the handicapped, dogs, cats, chickens, etc. When we speed through our villages we not only put all of these things at risk, but we cannot truly appreciate the beauty that is the village. We are all guilty of occasional speeding and sometimes we need a just a little reminder.
These signs work. I watch people hit the brakes when they see the signs. Let these flashing signs be a wake-up call. Wake up and be mindful of your journey and our residents. Please slow down and take the time to really see and appreciate our villages.
