Mulch time, but...

To The Editor:

Be careful where you put it! When mulching near the base of a tree or shrub, be sure, very sure, NOT to cover the bark. It eventually causes the bark to rot, the same as girdling a tree to cause it to die. It disrupts the living connection between the leaves and roots, starves roots and can eventually cause trees to die. According to the Cornell Department of Agriculture, mulch should be several inches from the base of a tree. You can check out "mulch/trees" online for more information.
