‘Welcome back to school’

By Waitsfield School Board

Welcome back to school! Your five-person school board is once again gearing up for another exciting year at Waitsfield Elementary School. We'd like to extend a special welcome to our new students and parents, as well as our newly hired faculty and staff members. We are glad you are joining our community of learners.

We are often asked what it is that we do as a board every year. Our overarching goal is to work with the school principal, the superintendent and our fine faculty and staff to ensure that we are collectively providing the highest quality education to all of our students for the fewest possible dollars, balancing educational excellence with fiscal prudence. As a board, we are also hard at work exploring the best possible relationship between our elementary school and the Washington West Supervisory Union as a whole, remembering that once our children leave sixth grade, they have another six years of public education ahead of them at Harwood Union Middle and High School.

To successfully ensure that we continue to meet these two goals, we have already begun our monthly board meetings. These meetings are every third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Waitsfield School library. Members of the public are always welcome.

Our year as a board looks to be an engaging one, as we continue to review, update and adopt school policies, set our budget goals for Town Meeting Day 2014, engage with our faculty around specific subjects and evolving curricula, continue to explore the educational implications of adopting the Common Core, and support principal Kaiya Korb and her team of educators in doing their best possible work with our town's young people. At the WWSU level, overarching foci are 1) supporting stronger student voice and engagement through teacher feedback forms and 2) complying to new testing standards without our quality educational experiences being defined by them.

As always, please feel free to reach out to board members with any questions, concerns and ideas you have for making our already fantastic school even better. You can contact us via email or telephone through the school website: www.waitsfieldschool.org/school-board.php. Here's to a fantastic school year ahead.

Waitsfield School Board members: Allison Champlin, Eve Frankel, Helen Kellogg, Rob Williams and Todd White.
