Vermont Symphony Orchestra Brass Trio plays Joslin Library benefit

The Vermont Symphony Orchestra Brass Trio will perform a concert to benefit the Joslin Memorial Library Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m. at the Valley Players Theater. Admission is free but donations to support the library will be gratefully accepted. Music performed will be a lively mix of classical and pops. Members of the group are Jason Whitcomb, trumpet, Joy Worland, French horn, and Lori Salimando-Porter, trombone.

Native Vermonter Whitcomb received his bachelor's and master's degrees at SUNY-Potsdam and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He has performed with the Ottawa Symphony, the Orchestra of Northern New York, and the West Virginia Symphony. Since returning to Vermont he has developed a large private teaching studio, performs with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the Middlebury Opera, and is an adjunct instructor at Saint Michael's College.

Worland, who is the Joslin Library librarian, was associate principal horn of the Nashville Symphony until 2009 and before that spent three years as principal horn of the Mexico City Philharmonic. During her 20 years in Nashville she performed in hundreds of concerts and national tours and earned six Grammys for recordings with the symphony. She also taught at Vanderbilt University, had a private teaching studio and was active in Nashville's commercial music scene, playing jingles, soundtracks and backup for many kinds of pop artists. Moving to Vermont brought more musical opportunities, and also the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of being a librarian.

Salimando-Porter was the principal trombone of the U. S. Military Academy Band at West Point, the U.S. Marine Band, El Toro, CA, and the U.S. Naval Academy Band in Annapolis. She has performed with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, the Baltimore Opera, the Maryland Symphony, and on Broadway. She holds a bachelor of music from the Eastman School of Music and a master of music from Catholic University and lives in Chazy, New York.
