Katherine Pick Perera

05/17/2007
Katherine Pick Perera, 42, of Hancock, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, surrounded by family and friends.

Katherine was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where she lived until 1981 when she moved to Boston. She graduated from Boston College and Boston College Law School.

Katherine met her husband in 1985 while they were both camp counselors in Hancock, Vermont, and the two were married in 1988. Katherine co-founded a nonprofit law practice in Boston to provide assistance to poor and indigent children. She moved to Vermont in 1992.

She spent years touring New England, educating school children and adults about HIV/AIDS. Katherine served on the board of directors of Vermont Cares in Burlington. She actively lobbied the Vermont Legislature in support of medicinal uses of marijuana. In addition, she taught Spanish to elementary students in Hancock and Granville.

In 2002, she co-founded a restaurant in Waitsfield, and shared her love of food with her staff and visitors to her restaurant. Katherine's passions were family, friends, food and gardening. In spite of her HIV status from 1982, Katherine's positive attitude, insight and love inspired all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Dan, two sons, Wilder and Jaro, her mother Barbara, sisters Dana and Jennifer, her brother Peter, and in-laws Thomas and Gretchen Perera. She was predeceased by her father, Pedro, in 2005. Katherine also leaves three golden retrievers, "Soca," "Mambo," and "Salsa."

Friends were invited to call on Tuesday, May 15, at the Town Hall in Hancock.

It was Katherine's desire to have memorial contributions sent to either Vermont Cares, P.O. Box 5248, Burlington, VT 05402 or Twin States Network, P.O. Box 882, Bellows Falls, VT 05101.
