Mary Haslam

Mary Haslam of Waterbury Center died peacefully early on May 25, 2011, in her home with her family and pets by her side. Born on August 24, 1929, Mary was the daughter of George R. and Mary (Ivans) White of Philadelphia, PA.

In 1979, she moved to Waterbury Center from Pomona, New York.

Mary’s career in office management varied from medical offices to local government and she was hired by the IRBA Insurance Company in Waterbury soon after her move. Before retiring, she worked hard for eight years as the unit coordinator at Central Vermont Medical Center Emergency Room where she enjoyed the challenge of multitasking problems and the camaraderie of her fellow workers.

Mary was an avid supporter to multiple charities and to her local community. She was active with the CVMC Auxiliary and the Waterbury Ambulance (WASI) and was a member of the Waterbury Library Commission and the Education Advisory Board for the Dale Correctional Facility. She mentored at Thatcher Brook Elementary School and Crossett Brook Middle School, tutored through the Vermont Adult Basic Education Program and gave her time to several political campaigns.

Mary was most passionate for family athletics, good mystery novels, the performing arts, animals and nature. She spent many years enjoying horseback riding and schooling students in English-style riding.

Her favorite pastime was hiking to the stream or Waterbury Reservoir with her dogs, digging in her flower gardens, catching up with family, playing cards and reading. She was a loyal fan to the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, the PGA, tennis and NASCAR.

Mary is survived by her four children, Valorie Haslam of NC, Chris Haslam and wife Dyan of NY, Eve Haslam of NC, and Taggert Haslam and wife Staci of Waterbury; her grandchildren, Heather Newman and husband Frank of NJ, Nicole Maldanado and husband Jon of NY, Jenna Haslam of NY, Amanda Haslam of Waterbury, Sandra, Danny, Bridget, Maggie and Bonnie Haslam of NY; great granddaughter; Jordyn Maldanado of NY; her brother; George White and wife Janice of PA; by nieces Wendy McClusky of MA and Carla White of CT and by nephew Ritchie White of NH.

Funeral services will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on June 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on June 5, 2011, from 7 to 9 p.m.
