It has been a sad month for us at the Warren Fire Department, as two of our members have now passed away. On Saturday, October 20, 2012, the WFD joined so many others to say farewell to Norris (Fat) Weston. Fat Weston was a well-known community member as well as a founding member of the Warren Fire Department. In fact, he was just recognized for his 65th year of service. Even after Fat lost his leg, he was still coming to as many meetings as he could to help out and lend whatever experience he had. If he couldn't participate in the trainings, he would position himself where he could see enough of what was going on so that as a third party he could lend advice on what we might not realize had happened.
Fat’s dedication to his family, community and most of all kids was outstanding and like no other. You could tell just by the way he talked how much energy and passion he had when it came to that and I can only imagine that’s why he started the Warren Fishing Derby which is still happening annually at the WFD. It always brought a smile to his face when he saw all the kids come in on a Sunday and get ready to go fishing. I am truly amazed to see a man being able to keep going like he did and still devote so much time elsewhere. None of it being asked of him, only done on pure joy and kindness.
In memory of Fat, I ask all the kids to come on down next year and the years after for the Warren Fishing Derby and have some fun – oh, bring their parents as well! Also, I ask for everyone to give a helping hand when need be, and be the best you can. May he rest in peace; you will be missed but never forgotten!
