Barbara C. McGrath

Barbara C. McGrath, 90, of Fairground Apartments, Moretown, passed away peacefully at the Helen Porter Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury on Wednesday evening, March 13, 2013. Born in Duxbury on May 19, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Rose L. (Lacillade) McGrath.

Barb attended schools in Duxbury and then went on to support the war effort by working in Rhode Island and Connecticut making parachutes. Returning to Duxbury, she worked for the former Demeritt Co. in Waterbury, manufacturing clothespins and in the cannery, and then moved to Burlington where she was employed in housekeeping at the University of Vermont for several years.

Leaving UVM, Barb worked at One Hour Martinizing Dry Cleaners of Essex before taking a position at Vermont College in Montpelier, working in housekeeping, from which she retired. She has resided in Moretown for the past 26 years.

Among Barb’s many gifts was being an accomplished seamstress. Her other interests included crocheting, enjoying flower gardens, doing puzzles and a variety of games as well as cake decorating.

She is loved and missed by her son, Michael J. McGrath, and his wife, Linda, of Moretown; her grandchildren, Lindy Boudreau and her husband, Jon, of Waterbury Center, Lisa Hallstrom and her husband, Louis IV, of Northfield, Travis McGrath and his wife, Nicole, of So. Barre, and Doreen MacKenzie and her fiancé, Brian Chandler, of Stratham, NH; her great-grandchildren, Brittney, Wil, Evan, Pacie, Liam, Cole and Abbi; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Barb was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Sherman, and a brother, Frederick McGrath.

Graveside services will be held later this spring from Holy Cross Cemetery in Duxbury at a date and time to be announced. For those who wish, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Helen Porter Health Care and Rehabilitation Center Activities Fund, 30 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753. Assisting the family is the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waterbury. To send online condolences visit www.perkinsparker.com and Facebook.
