Fifteen Fayston girls who participated in Girls on the Run and their
coaches, Lori Rush, Ali Hobart and Melissa Roberts.
This past Saturday several Valley third-, fourth- and fifth-grade girls participated in a 5K run held at the Essex Fairgrounds. This was the culminating event for Girls on the Run, a positive youth development program that combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. The core curriculum addresses many aspects of girls' development – their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. For the past several months, the girls have been learning and working together, along with their coaches. The Girls on the Run Vermont 5K Run/Walk events are non-competitive (untimed) events where everyone is a winner and everyone has a number on their event bib. More than 7,000 enthusiastic girls, families and community members participated in the events this past spring.
