HU boys finish 10th at States

By Steve Skilton

On Wednesday March 7, the Harwood boys' alpine ski team competed in the VPA state ski championships, hosted by Rutland High School at Pico.  In perhaps one on the most competitive boys' state meets held in resent years, the Harwood boys finished 10th in a field of 12 teams. Woodstock and Rutland placed first and second overall as teams.

Sean O'Brien led the Harwood boys in the giant slalom in 40th place. While his time was a little over three seconds out of first place, the times were very close as the course length was fairly short. Chad Koenig, 42nd, JP Guardino, 44th, Tanner Skilton, 46th, Aaron Chesler, 52nd, and Jamie Dillon, 56th, all skied good, solid, smooth runs in a field of 85 racers.

Austin Stewart, 23rd, led the Harwood boys in the slalom. After placing 35th in his first run, Austin skied a super second run, placing 15th, to move up for a solid two-run finish. Chad Koenig, 29th, JP Guardino, 41st, and Aaron Chesler, 52nd, all put in great efforts for the team and skied two good runs. Sean O'Brien, 58th, and Eric Bidlack, 66th, had problems on a run to keep them back in the overall standings.

The boys' team graduates four seniors this season. Austin Stewart, a first-year team member, has had numerous top 10 finishes this season. Jamie Dillon completed his second season on the team and had many fine performances this season. JP Guardino and Sean O'Brien are both four-year members of the team. Both Sean and JP have made an outstanding contribution to Harwood skiing and have represented their team and school well over the years. Their teammates wish them all the best of luck in their future skiing and education plans.
