The 27 members of Harwood boys' cross country team
(Kerrigan's Army) stormed into Morrisville on Saturday. Harwood boys
shocked Division 1 powerhouse St. Johnsbury. Harwood's one-point
victory was a team effort. Harwood boys were led by Eamon Welter (4) in
a personal record time of 17:23. Eamon was followed closely by Caleb
Kernan (7), Tim Shepard (8) and Nick Wisniewski (14) -- all had
personal best times. Sam McCausland's 17th place finish helped to seal
the victory for the Highlanders.
Harwood's JV boys were more impressive as they packed 7 runners in the
top 10. Zach Pfister won the battle of the Zach's; finishing second, he
was closely followed by Zach Munro (3) and Zach Russo (4). The next
Harwood runners were Ken Bourneouf (6), Josh Kernan (7) and Sam Ferenc
(9). All had personal record times.
Harwood girls had an off day. They finished fifth in the 10-team race.
Annie Mendes led the Harwood girls finishing a solid 10th. "Annie had a
nice recovery race. She collapsed in the heat and humidity at the Woods
Trail run last Saturday. It was nice to see her get back on the horse,"
said coach John Kerrigan.
Kerrigan was very impressed by the finish of senior Heather Cutler
(25). Heather took one and a half minutes off of her best time.
"Heather gets stronger with every race and inspires all of us with her
effort," Kerrigan said. Cutler was followed by Zari Sadri (31), who
also had a personal record. Chelsea Robinson (39), Kim Martin (45) and
Elena Bilodeau (49) also had strong efforts. "Kim had an appendectomy
10 days ago! Kim's race is not only a testament to modern surgical
techniques but her own fortitude. Kim ran a gutsy race today," said
Kerrigan.
Kaitlin Fitgerald, Lily McCausland, Ashley Robbins and Grace Kirpan
also had record-breaking performances in the JV girls race.
Twenty-seven of 35 runners had personal records.
"Our training has been going well. The mix of speed work and the over
distance runs on the hills of South Duxbury has made us fit and
competitive," Kerrigan said.
Kerrigan's Army is off to the Battle of Cricket Hill in the Lamoille
Valley on Friday. They hope to return as the Mountain Division
Champions.
