Sugarbush race club opens season

Last season the Sugarbush Racing Club seemed beset by "weather events" including wind holds, cold temperatures and even soft snow and this season's start appeared to continue the trend. Subzero temps contributed to a sparse display of spandex speed suits, but 53 racers braved the cold to try to equal the pace set on the twin courses by resident Olympian and national NASTAR pacesetter Doug Lewis.

Stan Button came close to the pace winning the men's division followed closely by Chris Downing and Rick Duckworth. John Lussier and Will Waite were next in line while Jay Myrto, Dave Seymour and Doug Shick carried the honor of the ski school on their capable shoulders.

Elizabeth Walker bested Petra Park by milliseconds to take the lead in the closely contested women's division. Spandex may have made the difference in that battle! Cyndee Button and Lauri Landau were third and fourth, respectively.

Jay's Restaurant hosted the après-race party. Many prizes were awarded to racers and non-racers alike including one of Deb Koch's famous baskets and a Jay's gift certificate.

Some of the "more seasoned" members of the club proved again that experience and skill can win out over youthful exuberance and, hopefully, that trend will continue during this week's race on January 10 when the party will move to Chez Henri.
