On Friday, December 5, at halftime of the Harwood Union girls' varsity basketball game against Northfield, the Harwood community was presented with the prestigious Mona Garone Sportsmanship Banner. Awarded annually to northern and southern Vermont schools the award is presented by the Vermont Basketball officials, IAABO VT Board 105.
The award is named for legendary Oxbow girls' basketball coach Mona Garone. In the words of the president of the officials' board: "Our organization had a great respect for Mona not only as a coach but as a person. She committed her life to her sport and her players. In doing this she brought excellence to the game, her players, fans, and the referees that officiated in front of her. We felt it fitting that we should honor her with this award. So after every game each official rates on a scale of 1 to 10 the home and away teams fans, coaches, players and administration. It is based on sportsmanship, attitudes, spirit, etc. We appreciate going into facility where good things are happening; your school should be proud."
The award is presented to Harwood, fans, coaches and teams.
