On Thursday, January 8, the Harwood Union alpine ski team opened the 2009 race season with a two-run slalom at Mad River Glen. On a day more fit for windsurfing than ski racing, the Harwood boys placed second overall, with the Harwood girls placing third overall in a six-team meet.
Sophomore Scott Graham led the Harwood boys by placing first overall in a strong competitive field of skiers. Aaron Chesler, 6th, freshman Colin McGlynn, 12th, and Tanner Skilton, 12th, all skied two solid runs and placed the Harwood boys behind the overall event winner, CVU.
The Harwood boys had a number of new skiers to this year's team competing for their first time in a high school race. Freshman Jack O'Shea, 25th, Amos Gaylord, 47th, and Dillon Welch, 49th, all put in great efforts in the event. Freshman Brooks Curran, who finished fifth in the first run, and Derek Lowe did not complete the event.
The Harwood girls' team was led by veteran skier Abby Brown, with a fine seventh-place result. Freshman Kaylie Hart, 9th, Caroline Dillon, 10th, and Caty Shea, 30th, placed the team third overall behind CVU and St. Johnsbury Academy. The Harwood girls' team also had a number of new faces in this year's team. Ally Bataille, 37th, and Ashley Hermanowski, 40th, skied well in their first race ever. Jessica Normandeau, Katy Johnson and Lucy and Lee Gubernick also skied for the team but did not complete the event.
The team heads to Bolton Valley on January 16 for a night race.
