Harwood boys place sixth at states

By Steve Skilton

On Monday, March 1, the Harwood Union boys' alpine ski team competed in the VPA
state championships held at Lincoln Peak at Sugarbush. In a competitive field of 14 teams, the Harwood boys placed a respectable sixth overall in the two-event competition. Rutland captured top honors with Burr & Burton the runners-up.

Scott Graham led the Harwood boys' team with a 21st-place finish in the giant slalom, followed by Colin McGlynn, 29th, Brooks Curran, 32nd, Jack O'Shea, 44th, Tanner Skilton, 49th, and Austin Hooper, 55th. All skied solid runs and placed the team in seventh after the GS. The racers ran under extreme winds and very soft snow after last week's huge snowfall. While this makes for great skiing, it is tough for good racing.

Graham led the team again in the slalom with a come-from-behind second run to place 14th overall. Brook Curran, 16th, Tanner Skilton, 17th, Jack O'Shea, 26th, Colin McGlynn, 43rd, and Jono Gross, 44th, all skied their best and placed the Harwood boys second as a team in the slalom. The Harwood boys are a stronger slalom team and had hoped the strong performance would have moved them up higher in the overall standings.

This concludes a very good season for the boys' team, winning four of seven meets this winter. Returning all but one skier, next year's prospects look great. Tanner Skilton is the only graduating member of the team. He is a four-year veteran and perhaps had his best season in his final year for the team.  His teammates wish him the best of luck in his future plans.
