Harwood girls’ hockey wins state championships

On Tuesday, March 12, the Harwood girls’ hockey team took the Division II state championship title after an exciting 1-0 overtime victory against North Country.

According to Harwood athletic director Sue Duprat, the entire team played strong throughout the game, and goalie Siena Damon “all but stood on her head, making save after brilliant save.” In the end, it was Haley Martini who scored the game-winning goal off a shot by Danielle Kuiper.

This is the first state title for Harwood girls’ hockey—coached by Mike Vasseur—and enthusiastic Harwood fans came out to the game in full force.

This year, the ice hockey coaches' all-star selections for Division II from Harwood includes forward Carrie Johnson and goalie Siena Damon on the first team, as well as forward Katie Martin on the third team. Emily Vasseur and Haley Spittle were named to the academic all-star team, and they will play with Carrie Johnson in the Rotary Cup game this summer.

Damon is third generation of HU state champions

Harwood girls’ hockey goalie Sienna Damon is the third generation of one Duxbury family to become a state champion in Vermont.

It started with Albert and Zelda Lavanway, Duxbury. Their son, Glen Lavanway, was a Vermont state wrestling champion. Albert and Zelda’s grandson, Jay Lavanway, was a two-time state wrestling champion and also a five-time track and field state champion.

Sienna Damon is Albert and Zelda’s great-granddaughter and is now a state hockey champion.

It must run in the family.
