Did you show President Obama's speech to the students? Why or why not?

Andreas Lehner, principal, Warren Elementary School
“The fifth and sixth graders brought their lunches upstairs and they watched it projected. Katie Sullivan showed it to the 3rd and 4th graders in the library. It seems to me that when the elected president of the U.S. speaks, people should listen respectfully and attentively. The man has a really interesting story to tell, and I thought it was great that he was willing to tell it to the kids.”

Chris Dodge, principal, Fayston Elementary School
“We did not show the president's speech. I had a number of communications with parents and there was a combination of concern about the speech and support for the speech. In an effort to honor the opinions of all families, I recorded the speech on CD and placed it in our library. I sent a letter home to all parents letting them know that it is available, and they can take it out and watch it with their children.”

Kaiya Korb, principal, Waitsfield Elementary School
“Our intention was to show it in the gym, but it was scheduled during recess and we wanted to have it be a more positive and inclusive experience – rather than bringing students in from recess. Then it was not available from the downloadable site until after school was dismissed for the day, so it was shown in individual classrooms the next day, and we were able to support more meaningful discussions with students about the speech.”
