During the race several residents cheered for the mass of exhausted runners from their front porches, children rang cattle bells and many thanked us for coming out to their community for the race. I had never felt such an overwhelming and outpouring of love and appreciation in any other community!

I had fallen in love with Vermont the very first time my husband and I participated in a weekend bike tour back in the early 1990s. I hope to one day become a permanent resident when my time for retirement is due and the kids are in college. There truly is no other place like your Green Mountain State in terms of natural beauty and sense of community.

I wanted to let the community of the Mad River Valley know just how heartbroken we were to see the video coverage of Irene’s wrath on your small town.

I had contacted Dori, this year’s organizer of the Mad Marathon, and she gave me suggestions on how best we could help. Despite our contributions to the Relief Funds, we continue to feel a sense of loss and sadness for your hardship.

I felt the need to let you and your wonderful caring community know our thoughts and daily prayers are with you as the rebuilding and rebirth continues for your special Valley.

May God give you the strength and comfort with each day and know you are not alone in your efforts.
