In my opinion, there is no question that we need to reduce our dependency on foreign oil and also move more rapidly away from dependency on carbon-based fuels and towards various forms of renewable energy as well as focusing on energy efficiency and conservation. As in any change, there are numerous factors to weigh as we move towards a sustainable future so that unintended consequences do not offset the benefits of a particular action.

My architect friend from Manhattan was visiting me again. He usually is a great guest. We enjoy discussing the state of architecture and urban design around the world. Almost before he alighted from his Audi he started complaining about the visual deterioration of the scenic Route 100 corridor.

The idea of Alpine Village was a spirited ambition of John Winston who purchased land in the late 1950s that comprised over 600 acres. He built roads and had surveying crews carve up the parcels; he even had community water and village recreation areas. His plan was to make Alpine Village a full season resort where, I quote from his brochures and press releases, "where houses could be built for summer and winter recreation."
