HU's Christine Milne elected president of FLBA |

Harwood Union junior, Christine Milne competed against two other candidates at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) spring leadership conference in South Burlington, Vermont, on April 1 and 2, and was elected by the voting delegates of the attending chapters to serve as president for the 2010-2011 school year. Two other students from Harwood, Derek Lowe, and Katelyn Dash, also attended the conference and won awards in impromptu speaking and client services. As president, Milne may be traveling to the FBLA nationals in Nashville, Tennessee. Next year she will lead the state in organizing the fall and spring conferences as well as assist Harwood's FBLA chapter in attending the national fall leadership conference in Washington, DC.

After learning about the power of personal stories and hearing about individual challenges, Harwood Union students in Steve Rand's creative writing class decided to write children's books to raise awareness about disabilities.  On Saturday, November 7, the Harwood Middle School Spelling team competed for the Regional Spelling Championship, held at Glover Community school. Competing schools included Glover, the host school, Craftsbury Elementary/Middle School, Walden School, Mississquoi Middle School, and Barre City. The Harwood team, consisting of Sarah Hoyne, Morgan Becker, Sophie Rayfield, Ray Parker, Katy Rosen and Nathanial Kazlow, scored 136/144 under the direction of their coach Judi Gross. They will compete for the state championship title on Saturday, November 21. |

Harwood Union Middle School staff hit the ground running as they launched into the 2009-10 school year. In addition to school and district-wide curricular and climate-related goals, the middle school is taking on the task of restructuring the advisory program. Some aspects of the program will remain in tact, but on the whole the focus and direction of the program will look and feel different to teachers and students alike.
