Lisa Atwood, principal at Harwood Union High School, was awarded the Alpha Delta Kappa Northeast Region Excellence in Education Award.

Lisa Atwood, principal at Harwood Union High School, was awarded the Alpha Delta Kappa Northeast Region Excellence in Education Award. She was presented with the award at the Northeast Regional Conference on July 23. The Northeast Region is one of seven regions across the country and includes Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Atwood was selected from applicants nominated by each of the 11 states. The award recognizes members of Alpha Delta Kappa for their outstanding contributions to education. To be eligible, the nominee must be an active member and be actively engaged in the education profession and be under contract in teaching, administration or some specialized field of education.

Nominated by a colleague or parent, nominees’ adjudication is based on professional dedication, knowledge, skills, professional achievement and success, school/community collaboration, contributions to the educational process and active involvement in Alpha Delta Kappa.

All seven regional recipients will move forward for consideration of the Alpha Delta Kappa International Excellence in Education Award, which is a biennial award given one time at the international level. The International Excellence in Education Award recipient will be announced and honored at the Alpha Delta Kappa International Convention held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in July 2019.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization of female educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding. The purpose of this organization gives recognition to outstanding women educators; builds a fraternal fellowship among women in the field of education which will add to their effectiveness in the promotion of excellence in education; promotes high standards of education and thereby strengthens the status and advancement of the education profession; promotes educational and charitable projects and activities, to sponsor scholarships, to further and maintain worthy standards in the field of education and to cooperate with worthy community programs relating to education and charities and contribute to world understanding, goodwill and peace through an international fellowship of female educators united in the ideals of education.
