To The Editor:

I liked “There is no Planet B” but have one small quibble. The idea that humans were living peacefully and sustainably prior to the Industrial Revolution is a myth. In fact, the fossil record shows that when our ancestors acquired the brain power and tool kit to colonize the entire planet roughly 50,000 years ago, they left a trail of death and destruction in their wake including many species extinctions.

Today our impact on the world is monumental with the exploitation of fossil fuels and our enormous and growing population. But it didn’t just start with the Industrial Revolution. We are doing what we are designed to do: exploit the planet’s resources and expand our numbers. There never was and never will be a golden age of humans living in harmony with their environment.
