Judging by President Trump’s increasingly high-pitched and hysterical rhetoric, these must be desperate times indeed.

With much of the country’s attention focused on the horrific events of the past 10 days, including pipe bombs sent to prominent Democrats, the racially motivated murders of two black people in a Kentucky grocery store and the anti-Semitic assault on a temple in Pittsburgh that left 11 dead including a 97-year-old Holocaust survivor, the president has struggled to keep the limelight where he likes it – on himself.

As the midterms and potential consequences for the president and his party approach, he’s throwing out false flags at a rate faster than fact-checkers can keep up.

In less than a week he’s announced that U.S. military troops are being sent to the U.S.-Mexico border in preparation for what the president has called an “invasion” of our country.

Never mind the blatant racism of that statement and its intent to stoke fear of the “other” seeking a better life by fleeing gangs, violence and worse. Never mind that these “invaders” are poor, on foot, hungry and willing to flee on foot. They are nowhere close to our borders today and won’t be close by next week or by the end of the month.

This inane presidential posturing about sending troops ignores the fact that federal law prohibits the military from engaging in law enforcement on American soil. Sending them is just another false flag.

This week the president announced that he would sign an executive order banning birthright citizenship, a move that garnered zero support from his own party and a proposal which both parties as well as legal scholars on both sides of the aisle pronounced impossible.

The 14th Amendment clearly provides that babies born on U.S. soil have citizenship. And, contrary to the president’s uninformed bloviating, the United States is not the only country in the world where birthright citizenship exists. There are some 30 countries with similar laws.

Don’t be fooled by the increasingly shrill and alarmist monologue of fear, hatred, lies and half-truths issuing from the president.

Stay the course and head to the polls with full knowledge that desperate times call for desperate measures and the president is desperate.
