This week, stuck to the door of The Valley Reporter offices in Waitsfield, we found an envelope full of newspaper clippings.  The words “PRINT THIS” were written on the front of the envelope.

Inside were clippings, most of which appeared to be recent stories from the New York Post. Printed on the top of the stories were exhortations to “Print Some Balanced News” “News You Never Print” and “No Coverage.” The stories ranged from critiques of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders to letters about “Hateful” anti-ICE protectors.

First things first. Thanks to our anonymous contributor for sharing your views with us. We appreciate that you care, and we respect your right to express your opinion.

But. And. However.

We can’t just wholesale reprint content that has run in the New York Post. The New York Post owns that content, and it doesn’t become free for the taking just because they printed that. The Post paid people to write those articles and paid to have them printed and paid to distribute the paper. We can’t just take their work.

Secondly, we don’t publish anonymous letters to the editor or anonymous content period. If you want to share your opinions with readers in the Mad River Valley, put your name behind your words.

Ultimately though, we appreciate all reader feedback and welcome everyone to share their thoughts and opinions on local, statewide, national and international events. We ask that people respect each other’s right to hold differing views and not make personal attacks. We ask that you sign your name and be willing to state your beliefs in the open public square of our Op-Ed pages.

In these fractured times, we can still be neighbors and engage over things we have in common, like wondering where the water is leaking from Waitsfield’s water system, or pondering how this spring’s installation of Warren’s village speed bumps will go. We can debate which roads to pave, how capital funds should be spent and how much to spend on schools and town budgets.
