Local food shelves are reporting greater need than ever and locals who gather toys for children in need report an increase in the families who need help. And the kids aren't just asking for toys; they are asking for everyday items like hats, mittens and toothbrushes.

Kids need hats; people need food; home heating oil and propane prices are at historically high levels along with gasoline prices and all the incumbent price hikes that brings. In one of the wealthiest countries in the world, we have a lot of people in our midst who need help.

It's not too late to get involved and help this year. The Mad River Valley Food Shelf is located at Evergreen Place, but there are food shelf donation boxes located all over The Valley, in schools and in shops.

At Waitsfield Telecom, employees teamed up with other contributors to purchase and wrap and distribute hundreds of toys for area children. While many of those toys have been wrapped and distributed, it may not be too late to help. Contact Tammy Field at 496-3391.

The Valley Interfaith Council provides help in a variety of ways, some of them monetary, some through food, goods and other services. To contribute through the council, call any of the local clergy.

The Mad River Valley Community Fund provides emergency assistance, home heating assistance, and a variety of other types of help. This homegrown organization does amazing things in our community for local people who need a little or a lot of help. Contact Mark Grosby at 496-6692 to contribute to the Community Fund.

Many of us have plenty to give and those who cannot give money may be able to give time or services to help their neighbors this year. The need is real.
