Select board chair Mac Rood said this week that the board has asked Cameron for a proposal outlining his services and expenses, and has not yet signed a contract with him.
Once the board receives the proposal from Cameron, they will discuss how the town will pay for the attorney's services, he said.
According to meeting minutes, the board met with Cameron for about one and one-half hours in executive session prior to hiring him.
The select board's action comes after the town's five-member road crew voted last month to join Teamsters Union Local 597 based in Barre.
Previously, road crew pay and benefits had been determined annually as part of the town's budgeting process for the highway department. The Warren crew is the first in the Valley to join a union.
Rood said once a contract has been signed, the town, through the attorney, will likely enter into negotiations with the road crew, hopefully "well before the next budgeting process." No specific timetable has yet been set, he said.
According to a biography on the website for the Montpelier-based law firm of Zalinger, Cameron and Lambeck, Cameron focuses on labor and employment law, the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, civil litigation and appellate advocacy.
He received his J.D. from Vermont Law School in 1980 and was elected chair of the school's board of trustees in 2001.
From 1985 to 1987, Cameron served as Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Personnel. He has also held the position of assistant attorney general assigned to the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Personnel, and was an adjunct professor at St. Michael's College from 1985 to 1990.
