A similar trend is illustrated in the number of zoning permits issued over the past decade; housing growth in The Valley and countywide follows the state average, especially during a peak seen between the year 2000 and 2005.

In Washington County, 37.3 percent of the housing stock was constructed in 1939 or earlier, and about 56 percent of the county's rental housing was built before 1940, according to Vermont Housing Data.

The town of Warren issued 31 building permits in 2004, the highest in the decade, 29 were single-family dwellings and 2 were multi-family units. The number of permits issued has steadily declined in years since.

Waitsfield's zoning permit data illustrates a spike between 2001, reaching a high of 15 permits issued in 2003 (all single-family homes). The number plummeted to eight in 2005 and began steadily rising again in 2006.

Fayston issued 10 building permits in the year 2000, only to peak at 28 permits (26 single-family and 2 multi-family dwellings) in 2002. Nineteen permits were issued in 2003 with the number steadily declining in years following. In 2007, Fayston issued eight zoning permits.

Moretown zoning permits peaked late in 2006, with 15 permits issued (all single-family homes). A sharp decline occurred in 2004, with four permits issued. Previous to the 2004 low, Moretown averaged 10 building permits per year between the year 2000 and 2003.
