The Eramos' first subscribed to Winemaker Magazine to "learn how
to make better wine," according to Diane, who took the photo and
designed the label. When she read about the contest, the couple thought
the unique story behind their root cellar might have a chance.
The Eramos' label for their Radic'e (meaning root) zinfandel was 1 of
only 30 labels to receive an award across several different categories.
The photo is of the front door of the root cellar that features a stone
arched ceiling comprised of stone gathered from their property. The door
was reclaimed from the former Lazarus building in Middlebury, now the
National Bank of Middlebury, while Mike worked on the complete
restoration of the building.
Mike said he has been making homemade wine since childhood and that he
and Diane have always "wanted to have a root cellar" at their home in
Granville; it was constructed two summers ago and has served the dual
purpose of root and wine cellar since. The Eramos' winning wine label is
feature in the December 2010/January 2011 issue of Winemaker Magazine.
