Hawks crash-landed a back flip off a 40-foot cliff on the first day of the competition. He was airlifted to Renown Health Center in Reno and died there on Tuesday. He was 25 years old.

The competition terrain was so difficult that other competitors, including Mad River Glen’s Lars Chickering-Ayers, crashed before the second round.

A graduate of the University of Vermont, Hawks was also a member of the Tecnica/Blizzard Freeride Team and of Green Mountain Freeride. Hawks grew up skiing at Sugarbush and Mad River Glen.
