Payments to vendors for repairs already made have amounted to approximately $227,000 as of July 19. The $1.5 million line of credit was selected, according to officials, because it offers the town the best flexibility for covering the repair work and providing funding when needed as the projects develop. 

The town will be reimbursed by FEMA for 75 percent of allowable expenditures, 12.5 percent from the state of Vermont and Duxbury will assume a 12.5 percent share (expected to be in the area of $150,000).

According to town officials, highway department foreman Steve Manosh is in the process of calculating the cost to the town for gravel and other materials used as well as overtime by town employees. 

The figures will be added to what has been paid to vendors in the town's application for FEMA reimbursement. 

FEMA officials visited Duxbury a week earlier to review the repairs that had been made and will return to review and collect the application.

John Grenier of Grenier Engineering presented the board with a projection of costs for repairs; the estimates include both engineering and construction costs. The Camel’s Hump slide repair is estimated at $600,000, the Crossett Hill bridge estimate is $280,000 and Pollander Road could reach $180,000.

In addition to what the town has accrued so far, the total amount comes to approximately $1.3 million.

Engineering work is underway for the Crossett Hill bridge project and the select board approved a contract for $82,000 with VHB of Ferrisburgh for engineering work on the Camel’s Hump project. 

Grenier presented an explanation from VHB regarding the geotechnical work needed to determine what subsurface soil and groundwater conditions exist before design work can proceed. 

Due to the limited space of the area to be repaired, the board will investigate the possibility of resurrecting an old road that ran parallel to Camel’s Hump Road. Long abandoned, it would cross property owned by the state and two private landowners; it would allow limited access while engineering and repair work takes place.
