Inspired by the commitment of a local service-oriented teenager, Small Dog Electronics is offering a little extra motivation to “green up” areas in need of the most help on May 5, Green Up Day, by giving away products. Despite the state’s significant progress since Irene hit, Sarah Chase, 13, ofRochester,Vermont, recognized the need for further cleanup efforts in her hometown and identified Green Up Day as the perfect occasion to rally support for the job.

She enlisted the help of Small Dog Electronics by boldly cold-calling the company in search of a partner. To encourage people to volunteer their time on Green Up Day, Small Dog Electronics will be hiding various prizes in sixVermontcommunities affected by Irene:Bethel, Granville, Hancock,Hartford,PittsfieldandRochester.

“Sarah’s determination to do good for towns affected by Irene inspired us to help any way that we could,” says Don Mayer of Small Dog Electronics. “We hope people will get out and get their hands dirty on Green Up Day because these prizes will not be easy to find, but a one-in-six chance to win an iPad should be ample motivation to help ‘green up’Vermont.”

“I’ve been doing Green Up Day for as long as I can remember,” says Sarah Chase. “It was fun to ‘green up’ my road with my mom and win prizes, and that’s why I felt the need to coordinate this event and make sure it stayed fun.”

The hidden prizes will range from bags of electronic gadgets to necklaces handmade by Sarah from recycled materials. Those who find the six prizes on Green Up Day will then be entered into a grand-prize drawing for an iPad 2 courtesy of Small Dog Electronics.

“We’re expecting more people than in past years because of the iPad scavenger hunt,” said Chase. “I don’t think the prizes have ever been this big or this exciting.”

Chase was elected asRochester’s town coordinator for Green Up Day at a Town Meeting and has been promoting this year’s event more than usual. Her unique approach to the community cleanup event has led to the partnership with Small Dog Electronics as well as the formation of a new costume-related contest for this year, as the event coincides with the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo. The volunteer with the best Cinco de Mayo costume inRochesterwill receive a special prize selected by Chase.
