Dr. Glenn M. Cahilly of Warren, passed away peacefully in New Tripoli, PA, on August 4, 2024, surrounded by family. He was 88.
Glenn was born on October 17, 1935, in Camden, New Jersey, to parents Glen M. Cahilly and Ruth M. McDonough. He was the first in his family to finish high school, college, and graduate school. He attended Haddonfield Memorial High School, received his BS in pre-veterinary Medicine at Rutgers University, and his MS in animal science and PhD in biochemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
While growing up, he fell in love with the adorable girl next door, Mary Ethel Brady, and in 1959 married her and they began a lifetime of adventure together. They honeymooned at Lake St. Catherine in Vermont and vowed to one day return and live in this beautiful state.
Glenn enjoyed a well-rounded professional career, first working at the Vineland Training School before becoming a technical director at Worthington Biochemical Corporation in Freehold, New Jersey. He established the Biochemistry Research Department at W.R. Grace & Co in Clarksville, Maryland, which led him to take the leap and establish his own laboratory -- Biozyme Medical Laboratories in Olean, New York.
Although he worked in the medical field for most of his life, his passions were family, nature, farming, animals, politics, and music. He and Mary decided to raise their five daughters on a farm filled with a wide variety of farm animals. Evenings were spent walking the surrounding countryside, playing frisbee, or making music with the “family band.” In his later years Glenn was often spotted outdoors, watching the birds, appreciating the mountains, and feeding chipmunks out of his hand. He spread his love of nature and music to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was also ravenous for learning, and his family often joked that his collection of books could stock a large library.
In 1993, the dream of moving to Vermont finally came true and Glenn and Mary chose the Mad River Valley to call home. Four of their five daughters followed them here. In 1995, Glenn established Mamopalire (an acronym of his five daughters’ names), Inc. of Vermont, and created and produced the award-winning Bethump’d with Words, Bethump’d with History, and Feilong board game and book series.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ethel (Brady) Cahilly and his five daughters: Mary Colleen Rooney (Patrick); Monica Joan Cahilly; Patricia Jo Anzivine (Lance); Linda Marie Faillace (Lawrence); and Rebecca Lynn Taranto (Richard), his nephews Bruce DeFrates (Lorrie), Jason Glen Cahilly (Beth), D. Bruce Cahilly (Janet) and nieces Denise Bauer, Joanie Boaggio, Gael L. Cahilly and Karen Cahilly as well as 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, D. Bruce Cahilly and sister, Joan A. Brown.
Although Glenn and Mary were living with Patty and Lance in Pennsylvania when he passed, his wish was to be buried in the Warren, Vermont, cemetery. He is deeply missed by his family and all who were lucky to know him.
