Bernard G. Dunbar Sr., 86, of Northfield, VT, passed away on February 27, 2026, with his children by his side. Bernard was born on May 31, 1939, to his loving parents, Gerald L. Dunbar Sr. and Agnes (Hoffman) Dunbar. Bernard was one of 10 children. Bernard attended school in Vermont in The Valley area. Bernard joined the United States Army in his younger days and served his country as a proud American. Bernard had a fulfilling career of more than 20 years with the Waitsfield Telephone Company as an installer.
Bernard married Dolores L. McQueen in the early 60s, and they had four wonderful children together: Bernard, Brian, Shelley, and Lorry. Bernard was a very talented machinist, carpenter, and woodworker. He loved tinkering and building cabinets. He was very inquisitive, and he once took apart a grader to see how it worked. Bernard was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting in the woods, lakes, and streams of Vermont.
Bernard is survived by his children, Bernard Dunbar Jr. (Saranya), Brian Dunbar (Monica), Lorry Needham (Tim), and Shelley Twitchell (Scott). He is also survived by his sisters Lorraine, Sheila, Jane, and Valerie. Bernard is survived by eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Agnes, his loving wife, Dolores, three sisters, and two brothers.
A celebration of life will be held on March 28, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Fayston Town Hall. This will include a potluck; for those attending, please bring a dish and memories of Bernard to share.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mayo Nursing Home at 71 Richardson St., Northfield, VT 05663, in Memory of Bernard.
