ObitKreindler

On April 25, 2026 Herbert Lewis Kreindler died in Burlington, Vermont. He was 91. Herb was born in Manhattan to David Kreindler and Anne Levin Kreindler, but was raised in Liberty, NY where he loved all the things he could do outdoors in the Catskill Mountains. The Grossinger Hotel provided the center for his childhood where he swam, caught frogs and turtles, learned to play golf, skied and was on the speed skating team with his siblings. He was proud of the medals he earned competing all over the state of New York, especially at the Silver Skates at Madison Square Garden. While he was a student at Liberty High School, his life changed forever when Barbara Baker moved to town and they became inseparable. Just over 69 years ago, as he neared graduation from Carnegie Tech with an engineering degree, he and Barbara (Bobbie) became Herb and Bobbie Kreindler in a fabulous wedding at the Grossinger Hotel.

Herb and Bobbie spent almost all of their married life on Long Island where he first worked as an engineer. Herb would proudly state that he was a risk taker. One of his most successful risks was when he retired from engineering in his early 40s, while he still had three children to put through college, to turn his passion for ancient coins into his career as a numismatist. Herb built lasting relationships with partners and clients all over the world. He relished the hunt, the risk, the research, and every part of this career from which he never fully retired. He loved all the overseas travel related to this business. He and Bobbie also loved to travel for fun - spending time in over 50 countries.

Although Herb didn’t live to have another golf season, he enjoyed this past winter in Vermont where he and Bobbie spent a lot of time with their family, and he enjoyed engaging in interesting conversations with everyone he met.

Herb is survived by his wife of more than 69 years, Bobbie, to whom he was entirely devoted, and their three children Ann Kreindler-Siegel and partner Gary Oberlender of Charlotte, NC, Steven Kreindler and spouse Laura Caffry of Waitsfield, VT and Jeffrey Kreindler and spouse Michelle Kreindler of Milton, VT.

Herb is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Melissa Barrios and spouse Elver Barrios and their children Xitlali, Luna and Nova, Daria Siegel and partner Walker Petersen, Charlotte Caffry McCubrey and spouse John McCubrey, Walker Caffry Randall and partner Sophie Levine, Brett Kreindler, Amanda Kreindler and Ashley Phillips Crawford.

Services were held at Temple Beth El of Huntington, NY on Thursday, April 30, 2026, followed by a burial service at the New Montefiore Cemetery.
