Judy was a 1948 graduate of Waitsfield High School and continued her education at Johnson State College, graduating in 1952. Following her marriage, Judy was busy and happy as a homemaker and raising her family. While living in Bedford, MA, she enjoyed working part time with Kinder Care, a daycare and after school program, was a volunteer at the Metropolitan State Hospital offering adult patients time outside the hospital setting and helped organize and run a parent-led kindergarten.
Returning to the Mad River Valley in 1991, she and Jack were members of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Waitsfield, were members of the Waitsfield Couples Club and she enjoyed being part of the Valley Garden Club. Her special interests included vegetable and flower gardening, and she was known as an excellent cook.
Judy is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jack Smith of Waitsfield; their children, Kathleen Barlow of Reading, MA, Norman J. Smith and his wife Aleta of Watauga, TX, Kendall T. Smith of Merrimack, NH, and Michael S. Smith and his wife Donna of Waitsfield; four grandchildren; a brother, Clarence "Jerry" Tucker of Liberty, SC; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Judy was predeceased by three sisters, Kathleen Tucker, Pearle "Pat" Robinson and Alice Schwendler, a brother, Thomas Tucker, and a grandson, Mathew Barlow.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Waitsfield on Thursday, July 24, at 11 a.m. with inurnment to follow in the Waitsfield Common Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673.
