Estella H. Meaker, 98, of Perry Hill, Waterbury, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Tuesday, December 30, 2008. Born in Montpelier on November 18, 1910, she was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (Buchanan) Hoare. On August 17, 1935, Estella married Ralph S. Meaker in Montpelier. Ralph predeceased Estella on December 27, 2001.

Estella was a 1929 graduate of Montpelier High School and as a young woman she was employed first by the Brown Insurance Agency and later by the State of Vermont Tax Department. Following her marriage, Estella was busy and happy as a homemaker and raising her family.

Her memberships included the Waterbury Congregational Church and she was a former member of Queen Esther Chapter #7, OES of Waterbury. In her leisure time, Estella enjoyed playing bridge, flower gardening, refinishing furniture and antiquing. She will be lovingly remembered by her family as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She took particular pride in her family and her home and enjoyed her many dear friends.

Estella is survived by her children, Nancy Laird and her husband Jim of Westport MA, John Meaker of Waterbury, Thomas Meaker and his wife Pamela of South Burlington; her nine grandchildren, Jennifer White of Nyack, NY, Sarah Laird of Nyack, NY, Nicholas Laird of Oslo, Norway, Alice Varon of Marbletown, NY, Ruth Chiarolanzio of Marbletown, NY, Jeffrey Meaker of Brooklyn, NY, Nancy Meaker of Washington, D.C., Diana Meaker of Philadelphia, PA, and William Meaker of Boston, MA; 10 great-grandchildren; her brother, Joseph Howard of Montpelier; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
