Stanley E. Austin, 69, a lifelong resident of Moretown, passed away in the comfort of his home and family on Thursday, March 17, 2011. Born in Montpelier on July 20, 1941, he was the son of the late Theron E. and Helen A. (Murray) Austin. Stanley attended Moretown Elementary School and was a 1960 graduate of Montpelier High School.

In the early 1960s, Stanley worked for L. M. Pike and Son Construction Co., building Interstate 89 and was a member of the ski patrol at Sugarbush. He later worked for the state of Vermont highway department and in the late 1960s started his long career as a carpenter, working first for Brothers Building Co. of Waitsfield and then for over 25 years for Austin Building Co. of Moretown where he helped construct many homes, condominiums and businesses in the Mad River Valley.

On April 5, 1963, he married the former Suzanne Sutherland in Warren. Stanley joined the Mad River Lodge #77, F&AM in 1971 and served as master from 1977 to 1978. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling, camping, golfing and baseball. He was a lifelong avid Red Sox fan.

Stanley is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Suzanne Austin of Moretown; a son, Shannon Austin of Essex Junction; two sisters, Wilma Maynard and her husband Gerald and Marilyn Spaulding, all of Moretown; two brothers, Harold “Hoover” Austin and Merrill Austin and his wife Marti, all of Moretown; his sister-in-law, Judy (Sutherland) Lisenby and her husband Richard of Midland, NC; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and longtime close friends Burley and Linda Harvey of Berlin. He was predeceased by a brother, Wendall Austin.

Friends called at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Sunday, March 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. with a Masonic service to conclude the visitation. Spring inurnment will take place in the Warren Village Cemetery.
