To The Editor:

Last week, I drove a neighbor to a medical appointment in Berlin. On the way back, we stopped to pick up prescriptions for another friend who couldn't get to town. This is what we do here in the Mad River Valley – we take care of our friends and neighbors. But taking care of each other requires more than individual kindness. It requires showing up when decisions get made. September is when we choose who speaks for us. Not in Washington, not even in Montpelier, but right here in the Mad River Valley. Our towns will hold Democratic caucuses – Waitsfield (September 12, 10 a.m.); Warren (September 15, 5 p.m.); Fayston (September 16, 5 p.m.); Duxbury (September 25, 6 p.m.); and Moretown (September 30, 6:30 p.m.) - throughout September. Each town elects its Democratic committee. Those committees send delegates to the Washington County Democrats. The county sends representatives to the state party. These neighborhood meetings are where we can set the agenda for real grassroots politics over the next two years. If we want affordable housing, flood resilience, and a Valley where workers can actually live, we need to take control ourselves. The September meetings are where you either raise your hand to lead or choose who will.

Mark your calendar. Bring a friend and/or a kid. Come with one issue you care about or just a lot of questions. Be ready to step up or back someone who will.

Our Valley needs you. Not someday. Now.
