Ever wonder how many speeders are nabbed by the Washington County Sheriff’s deputies when they patrol The Valley? Or wondered what other offenses deputies are pulling people over for?

Read on for a look at the offenses that get people the blue lights in their rear-view mirrors.

At the request of the Waitsfield Select Board, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department presented a year’s worth of citations, arrests and activities to the board last month.

50 MPH ZONE

Those stats show that there were 50 speed limit citations, 30 of which were on Main Street, two on Bridge Street, five on Common Road, four on East Warren Road, and two on North Road. There were also seven additional Main Street citations for driving over 50 mph in the 50 mph zone on Route 100.

One person was cited for failing to stop or yield at an intersection, one person was cited for passing inappropriately, one person was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and two people were cited for using portable handheld devices. All of the above occurred on Main Street.

Deputies also issued 15 citations to drivers whose licenses were under civil suspension. One of those was on North Fayston Road and the other 14 were on Main Street. Eight people were cited for no registration, seven of them on Main Street and one on North Road. One person was stopped on Main Street for improper license plate display.

NO INSURANCE

Five people were cited for no insurance, three on Main Street and one each on North Road and North Fayston Road.

Thirty-one people were stopped because their car was out of inspection. Two of those were on Bridge Street, one on Common Road, one on Slow Road and 27 on Main Street.

Additionally, two people were stopped on Main Street for unauthorized use of an inspection sticker. Three people were cited for possession of marijuana, one on North Fayston Road and two on Main Street. Those civil violations came to a total of 132, compared to a total of 743 for the entire Valley.

CRIMINAL ARRESTS

In terms of criminal arrests, there were five arrests for DUI on Main Street. There were eight arrested for license suspended-criminal. One was on Butcher House Drive, one on Joslin Hill Road, two on Main Street, two on North Road and one each on Slow Road and Tremblay Road.

There was one arrest for attempting to elude on Main Street and one arrest for negligent operation on North Fayston Road. There was one arrest for violation of conditions of release on North Road and one arrest for violation of parole/probation on Main Street.

OTHER INCIDENTS

There were 110 “other incidents,” reported by the sheriff’s department. Half of those, 55 incidents, were identified as “foot patrol” and all of those took place on Main Street. There were 12 agency assists including nine on Main Street. There were seven reports of a suspicious persons/circumstances, five of which were on Main Street. The other incidents took place at various locations in Waitsfield including nonreportable accidents, alarms going off, E911 hang-ups, juvenile problems, liquor law violations, traffic hazards, trespassing, unsecure premises and welfare checks.
