Blueberry Lake Blueberry Bush Workday

Looking for a morning filled with fun, community, and meaningful work outdoors? The Warren Conservation Commission and the U.S. Forest Service invite residents, visitors, and neighbors to join in helping to prune and maintain the blueberries for which Blueberry Lake is named.

The work will take place this weekend, on Sunday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to noon, and will help keep those free, public blueberry bushes in good shape.

Warren Conservation Commission member Amy Polaczyk noted that Blueberry Lake is named for its abundant blueberry patch.

"Recently, raspberry bushes have started to crowd out our treasured blueberries. Together, we can help maintain and protect these plants,” she said.

What’s involved?

Participants will be removing invasive raspberry canes and pruning older blueberry bushes to encourage healthy growth.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to spend time outside, enjoy nature, and use your gardening skills, all while helping preserve a local treasure,” Polaczyk added.

Be prepared for some adventure – volunteers will navigate tall grass, remove thorny raspberry canes, and prune sharp blueberry branches. For safety and comfort, wear closed-toed shoes or boots, long pants, and sleeves to protect against scratches. Bring work gloves, insect repellent if desired, and weather-appropriate gear such as a raincoat or hat.

Don’t forget the tools! If possible, please bring equipment like loppers, shears, rakes, or trimmers in good working condition.
