The Green Mountain Roamers Snowmobile Club of Waterbury announced the debut of the Vintage Snowmobile & Powersports Show to be part of this year’s Vermont Automobile Enthusiasts Antique and Classic Car Meet, scheduled for August 8 through 10 at Farr’s Field in Waterbury.
This new exhibition, sponsored and managed by the Roamers club, will showcase a wide range of machines from the golden days of winter and off-road recreation, including vintage snowmobiles, early ATVs, dirt bikes, and three-wheelers. The show is looking to exhibit vehicles that are model year 2000 and older, according to Steve Torrey, club trailmaster, one of the new show’s organizers.
“We're hoping to draw an entirely new audience of people and machines to enhance the amazing show the VAE always provides,” Torrey said. With its colorful lineup and stories of backwoods ingenuity, the new class of vehicles on display will celebrate Vermont’s heritage of year-round motorized adventure, he added.
Torrey noted that wintertime often brings a fair number of vintage snowmobile-related gatherings. “Crossing genres between sleds, ATVs, three-wheelers, and dirt bikes, to bring all of the power sports community together is appearing to be a unique one-off event,” he said. “We're very excited to see the turnout we get, and hope to grow this segment of the show yearly.”
Some key details: All of the machines to be on display must be 25 or more years old; there is no preregistration, entry is at the main gate; trailered entry only, no riding permitted on the showgrounds. Fee: $5 weekend display per machine (for the first five); additional entries are free.
Awards will be made on Sunday during the show in the categories of: Furthest Traveled, Shortest Traveled, Most Unique, and Best of Show.
To launch what organizers hope will be a new tradition, this will be a non-judged show for its first year, with an emphasis on community, conversation, and preservation. All are welcome to enter, attend, and explore a new corner of Vermont’s motorized past, Torrey said.
