On Saturday, December 6, the Duxbury Historical Society will present a special holiday program based on a true story from the late 19th century.

The community is invited to “step back in time” at the premiere of an original program titled “The Christmas Present,” based on a “surprising” local event from 1890. That’s the description the historical society includes in its announcement of the event.

The program retells a memorable moment from days gone by involving two local residents, Charles Corliss and Fanny Hill.

“In 1890, Charles Corliss walked to the South Duxbury Church. Sitting across the aisle was Fanny Hill. What happened next surprised the whole town!” the society teased in its description.

The theatrical performance will feature several society members, including George Woodard, Ramona Godfrey, Don Welch, Mark Morse, and Skip Flanders, among others.

Given that the building does not have central heating, attendees are encouraged to dress warmly, perhaps even bringing along a lap robe or blanket, in keeping with the spirit and custom of the 1890s, the society suggests.

Admission will be by donation at the door, and light refreshments will be served.

The program will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, at the Old Meeting House (formerly the South Duxbury Church) on Vermont Route 100, across from Harwood Union High School.

Special note for attendees: The entrance to this historic building includes six exterior stairs.
