ViensSledDonation

The Waitsfield Historical Society has received a donation that celebrates the life and legacy of the late Shirley Mae Fiske Viens, a devoted board member and passionate advocate for preserving the rural character of Waitsfield and Vermont. Viens, who spent many years as the hospitality chair and assistant archivist, died on June 11, 2025. She was with her three sons in the home her husband built for them following their marriage.

The Viens family recently held an estate sale featuring a large collection of yesteryear memorabilia. Among the items was an antique horse drawn sleigh – a piece that holds meaning for both the Waitsfield Historical Society and others who enjoy the sight of the Wait House. Viens used the sleigh to decorate the front porch during the holiday season, a tradition that brought joy to neighbors and visitors alike.

The day before the sale, Lois DeHeer spoke with club resident Alice Peal, who asked her to check the sleigh and its price. DeHeer attended the sale, contacted Peal, and spoke with Viens’s son, Guy. All three of her sons offered to donate the sleigh to the Waitsfield Historical Society, and Guy Viens volunteered to store it until the board arranges for storage.

The Waitsfield Historical Society expressed deep gratitude for the donation, noting that the sleigh will serve as a lasting tribute to Shirley Mae Fiske Viens’ dedication and love for the community. Her legacy continues to inspire efforts to preserve local history and rural traditions for future generations.
