Hugh Campell obituaryHugh David Campbell, age 89, of Northfield and formerly of Waitsfield, died peacefully on October 1, 2019, surrounded by his wife and family.

Loving and much-loved husband of Eleonore “Lorli” von Trapp Campbell, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage, Hugh graduated from Milton Academy, Yale University and Middlebury College. Hugh’s work as an educator (French, college placement, coaching soccer) took them to Canterbury School in New Milford, CT, The Roxbury Latin School in West Roxbury, MA, and Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich, RI, where he served as headmaster. In 1975, they moved to Waitsfield, VT, where he worked as a financial planner with IDS/American Express now Ameriprise.

Hugh enjoyed fly fishing in Vermont, Colorado and Utah’s Green River. He loved spending time with his 16 grandchildren, working in his woodshop and in the garden, and the challenge of watercolor painting. He found Vermont’s beauty everywhere and in every season. The fishing and painting came together when he wrote and illustrated a children’s book on the life of a trout. He cherished his friendship with God and was an active church member and community leader.

Hugh was a devoted father to his seven daughters, Elizabeth (Howard Saxner) Peters of Cambridge, MA; Peggy C. Sanders of Charlotte, NC; Jeanie (William Lero) Lero of Hollis, NH; Polly (William Moore) Moore of Waitsfield, VT; Erika (Kevin Copeland) Copeland of Hayden, CO; Hope (Mark McAndrew) McAndrew of East Hardwick, VT; and Martina C. Price of Jericho, VT. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and three great-grandsons. Another grandson, Timothy David Price, predeceased him.

Family and friends are invited to meet on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 10 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Waitsfield, VT, to celebrate Hugh’s life. Burial will follow at the Common Cemetery, 1027-1103 Joslin Hill Road, Waitsfield. A reception will follow. Online condolences may be left at www.dayfunerals.com. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation in Hugh’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, Trout Unlimited or Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements are by Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
